gitane
NYC's mission is to bring you the most diverse
and compelling selection of jewelry from around the world.
The company was founded in 2004 by Katherine Ainsworth when
she purchased stunning handmade pieces during her travels.
She then began designing and crafting jewelry in this same
vein and continued to collect pieces abroad, bringing together
an exquisite ensemble from around the world. The company is
named gitane, translated from French as gypsy, to reflect
the wanderlust which inspires the selections. |
| centimes |
centimes are the coin denominations
used in parts of Europe and Northern Africa and are equivalent
to "cents" or "pennies" in the US. The
line is so named because of the lower price points of the
fun, fabulous pieces in this globe-spanning collection. |

Founder and designer Katherine
Ainsworth developed her style sense while working at various
jobs in the fashion and publishing industries in New York
City, including Glamour, Us Weekly, Self, Advertising Age,
KCD and Club Monaco. Exploring foreign cultures also influenced
Katherine's aesthetic sense. Travels to India, China, Morocco,
Turkey, Mexico and Europe, as well as living in London and
on the French Riviera, have left lasting impressions and the
results are evident when looking at the gitane NYC collection.
In addition, working with the late David Saity, renowned collector
of Native American jewelry, brought her an admiration of Southwestern
design. |
